Student debt in the United States is a huge issue for American citizens of varying socio-economic levels. There are many organizations working to make higher education more accessible. One huge aspect to making education more accessible is addressing the role that finances play in ones ability to receive higher education. The Project on Student Debt is an initiative of The Institute for College Access and Success that works to bring attention to how huge of a problem the issue of student debt is and to help families understand different options and solutions to help make attending higher education more attainable.

The Project on Student Debt is only one of the projects that are being worked on by the Institute for College Access and Success. The organization has over ten employees who are working directly on issue relating to educational equality and access. This website of this initiative was launched in October of 2005. Edie Irons, who manages the institutes external communications including media relations, the website and the organizations publications, spoke about how one of their main goals is to raise awareness on the issue and bring light to how serious the issue truly is. One of the crucial parts of their mission is to spread information on the issue and their website allows them direct access to people in search of information on student debt. The organization is dedicated to making attending college an affordable reality.

The organization is one of the leading independent experts on student debt and because of this they receive calls and e-mails all the time from people with questions. There expertise allows them to be a resource for people seeking information on student debt. Within the organization they are able to look at how effectively they are reaching their target population by looking at how many people are visiting their websites. This information is generally used internally but it is very important none-the-less. Their information on readership helps them provide information and publications to different demographics. Their website houses publications, initiatives, and resources. Additionally, one can sign up to receive e-mail updates; however, one of the most useful pages they house is a page on advice before borrowing page that gives information and tips on how to borrow more effectively. This website is able to house all of this information while also providing a space for people to share their experiences with loans and student debt.

As graduation rolls around and many students are faced with the fact that their student loan payments are going to need to start being paid soon organizations like The Project on Student Debt will become even bigger resources for recent graduates.

Is comprehensive Immigration Reform Ever Coming?

The United States is a nation of immigrants; however, immigrant quotas have been instated and limits have been placed on who can enter the United States of America. The United States has been and still is seen as a land of economic promise that allows for new opportunities. Immigration reform is an issue that should be at the forefront of our countries mind because of its effect on every aspect life within the United States both for citizens and for undocumented peoples living within the countries borders. President Obama clearly stated during his campaigns that he would work on immigration reform and would make significant change within one year of being elected. Today, over one year after his in-statement into office, immigration policy remains the same. Immigrant advocates all agree that immigration reform needs to happen; however, it is not agreed on what that reform looks like. Should comprehensive immigration reform become a priority for the United States government? Specifically, is immigration reform legislation something that President Obama should push through considering his promises to the immigrant community of the United States? Based on his election and prior promises, President Obama should address the immigrant population of the United States and make definitive and realistic promises about what immigration reform will look like within the coming year.

Immigration to the United States is a long and tedious process for all but what barriers exists which make it more difficult for some than others? The process of receiving a green card, moving to the United States, and applying for citizenship is a long process. The process is filled with forms, meetings, appointments, money, and above all else perseverance. Throughout the process the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) becomes one of the most important sources for people applying for citizenship. This website offers information on the legal side of immigration.

Undocumented people in the United States is seen as one of the biggest issues surrounding immigration law and is most likely the biggest reason why people are opposed to immigration reform. The rigid law that exists right now leaves no room for otherwise law-abiding citizens to ever become citizens of the United States. In Eugene, Oregon specifically there are many organizations and individuals working for immigration reform. Some of these organizations that exist within Eugene include “Amigos,” “Coalition for a Working Oregon,” and “CAUSA” additionally, there are larger organizations that work on a national level including “FAIR” and “Reform Immigration for America.” These organizations are just a handful of the resources working for immigration rights and reform of some sort.

Diego Hernandez, a fifth year senior at the University of Oregon, realizes the struggle that he and other activists in support of immigration reform are up against. Diego has been working for the past few years with other community organizers including Guadalupe Quinn to gain support for immigration reform specifically the DREAM Act. On March 9th they helped gain DREAM Act support in Eugene, Oregon. Their hard work is just a small step in immigration reform. The DREAM Act stands for “Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors.” The act would help otherwise law abiding students both have access to possibly gaining citizenship as well as reduced tuition rates for university educations. Currently, undocumented students are required to pay out of state tuition. Many immigrant advocates say that this creates additional barriers for students in which the US has already invested money in their education.

Among immigrant right advocates it is agreed that this shouldn’t be the only aspect of the reform this aspect seems to have the most tangible and clear benefits. The DREAM Act would be a step in the right direction because it specifically targets students who were brought here under the age of sixteen. These students are otherwise law-abiding residents of the United States. While it would be ideal that Obama would push through comprehensive immigration reform which would allow possibility for undocumented residents to work towards citizenship it seems as though a baby step would be allowing students this chance.

Often times students are the population that is most invested in. Patricia Cortez an employee of “Amigos,” a Multicultural Service Center, works provide immigrant teens and adults leadership experience. The center isn’t a social service organization but rather seeks to offer leadership development and advocate for immigrants rights. It also offers teens a space in which to interact with other students going through similar experiences. The specific program that is run by the Amigos Multicultural Center is called “Juventud Faceta” and it works to provide experiences to immigrant youth that help them understand their culture and have leadership experiences. Programs like this are vital in moving towards the acceptance of immigrants. The DREAM Act would help support many students who are already being invested in.

While many people are inherently against immigration reform it is vital to look at the benefits that would come out of a reform of the current policy that exists. It is important to look at the economic shortcomings of current policy namely that undocumented workers living in the United States are not paying taxes. There are many economic factors that currently play in to immigration reform. Specifically, in the case of the DREAM Act these students are already being invested in through their lower education and allowing them to pay in state tuition would only help them mildly in their struggle in this country. It is not a secret that students who attend college and university tend to make more money later in life and so giving these young students a small break on tuition and allow them a pathway towards citizenship it is clear that giving them these opportunities would benefit the United States in the future.

Obama must address the immigrant population that put him into office. While comprehensive immigration reform within the next year is unlikely the growing acceptance of the DREAM Act makes it realistic that within the next year this specific act may get passed as a test to see the impacts that it has. Obama will not be reelected if he does not address this population. In his “State of the Union” address he spoke thousands of words however only thirty-seven of them related to immigration. In a country composed of immigrants it is vital to address the citizens who are affected by strict immigration law.

Sources:

Diego Hernandez – (Citizen Interview) – Diego is a senior at the University of Oregon who is involved on campus as well as specifically with the DREAM Act. He works with other immigration advocates, including Guadalupe Quinn. Guadalupe is a long time community organizer who now works with students like Diego. Diego is involved with Mecha a student group for Latinos. Diego’s most recent work includes proving the support of city council member in Eugene, Oregon for the act. Diego sees the need for immigration reform and is coming to the debate from a student perspective. Diego seems to speak for the student population working on the act and I was referred to him multiple times but other community organizers. Diego helped show the support of the act that the city council in Eugene, Oregon has for the act. While their support hasn’t changed existing legislation it helps show the support that the community they represent has. As more cities show their support it will put pressure on President Obama to put the issue of immigration reform at the top of his priority list. Students like Diego help put this important policy into motion and are able to access other passionate youth who come from backgrounds that would be greatly affected if vital legislation like the DREAM Act was passed.

Amigos – (Institutional) - Amigos is a multicultural service center located in Eugene, Oregon. Some of the services that the center provides are to advocate for the needs of Latin American immigrants and to provide immigrants with leadership skills and development starting at an early age. The organization lists other resources available within Oregon, the United Sates, and the world. One great aspect is that the website is in both English and Spanish to be able to reach out to as many people as possible. The organization is funded by donations including corporate donors, “In kind Donors,” artists, and individual donors. The center has a staff as well as a board of directors and has numerous volunteers. This organization specifically works with immigrants and deals with immigrant issues including hunger issues and leadership development. This is not a government organization and acts a community organization and is run by and for the community. This organization helps bring immigrants together and offers them resources to make their transition to their new life easier. It serves as a great center for immigrants and specifically runs a program for Latino youth. Their youth program is called “Juventud Faceta” and specifically works on teaching about culture and leadership. Date Accessed 02/22/10.

Oregon’s Immigrant Rights Coalition (CAUSA) – (Institutional) – CAUSA is a grassroots immigrant rights coalition. They work to pursue immigrant rights locally and nation wide. One of their key goals is to find a way for undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States to be able to become citizens. This is one of the major points of contention in the debate of immigration reform. CAUSA is supported by donations and has an online donation page on their website. The organization seems very large and they have a monthly “e-zine” that give information about events and progress being made. Their homepage has news about immigration that is updated on a regular basis and serves as a resource for people wishing to learn more. Another resource that they have is a list of fact sheets and studies to help educate immigrants. Date accessed: 02/22/2010. I met with Ranfis Villatoro who is the Eugene community organizer and he shared vital information about the work he is doing. He is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon and he, like other immigrant reform organizers, is working to show support for the act. He helped organize a prayer service and procession to show support of comprehensive immigration reform. The service took place just days before the city council vote (March 7th 2010).

Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) - (Institutional) – The Federation for American Immigration Reform is a non-profit, non-partisan group that believes that immigration policies must be reformed. FAIR is advocating for a temporary hold on all immigration except for spousal immigration and minor children of U.S. Citizens. The organization has created seven principles of true comprehensive immigration reform. Much of these principles relate to what should be done in order to curb illegal immigration and the consequences for those who illegally immigrate to the United States. This is different from many immigration reform groups because it specifically addresses what should happen to undocumented people living in the United States. This non-profit organization has about 250,000 members and is supported by personal contributions and foundations. The website claims that, “FAIR is widely regarded as the most credible source for immigration issue analysis by members of Congress and has appeared before various committees 100 times throughout our history.” The organization encourages civilians to lobby their representatives and work for immigration reform. This is a very proactive way of looking at immigration and clearly tells citizens how they can help establish change. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

Reform Immigration For America – (Institutional) – This campaign works to bring together organizations and individuals in the pursuit of immigration reform. They are apart of the Tides Advocacy Fund, which in part means they are a lobbying group. In that way the donations they receive are not tax deductible. The campaign strongly believes that everyone is stronger if everyone has rights and so they are working to solve the issue of immigration for undocumented workers who are presently in the United States. There are four reasons that they claim we should reform and they include, family, workers, economy, and security. The website also houses a blog about immigration and therefore gives a very personable account of immigration reform. The website seems to be trying to appeal to a younger demographic and it is possible to receive text messages with updates on immigration reform. In addition, there is a map of the US that reads “Act Locally” implying how easy it is to affect change locally. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) - (Governmental) – The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that oversees legal immigration to the United States. This agency doesn’t look at immigration reform but deals with the legal side of lawful immigration. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the federal agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. They are a component of the Department of Homeland Security. They deal with citizenship issues including individuals, family members, and adoptions. Because of this they have legal information more than resource information. The website houses forms and can be accessed in both English and Spanish. This is a government organization so I was able to find little on funding but an interesting aspect is a form, which gives information about misconduct by staff, which was different than any other source I found. Because this is so much about laws and regulations it is a great way to understand how hard legal immigration can really be. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

Immigrations Costs— and Benefits - Wall Street Journal – (Journalistic) – This journalistic conversation between Gordon Hanson and Phillip Martin discusses the underlying causes of both legal and illegal immigration. These two educated men were asked by the Wall Street Journal online to hold this conversation. One of the biggest points that is made is the difference between legal and illegal immigration and those differences in regards to economic differences between the two groups. This conversation specifically focuses on the issue of Jobs. These men are both from California and acknowledge that currently there is a big proportion of immigrants from Mexico and Latin America. This article is able to compare and contrast legal immigrants with undocumented immigrants which helps people unfamiliar with the differences see how they are in fact different populations. Average citizens often do not know and understand the difference between undocumented immigrants and legal immigrants and it is really important to note the differences. Because these men are both highly educated and were sought out to have this conversation by the Wall Street Journal it is important to view this as a Journalistic source that was written for an average online newspaper reader. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

Coalition for a Working Oregon – (CWO) – (Organizational) – The Coalition for a working Oregon is made up of 20 Oregon employer groups with more than 300,000 Oregon workers. These employers are in favor of comprehensive immigration reform. They have seven guiding principles with one of the most important being that immigration reform should be comprehensive and allow for Oregon businesses to continue being effective businesses. Additionally, there should be the ability for otherwise law abiding tax paying employees to be able to gain legal status. Forms that exist on their website include a donation form and an online form to become involved and learn more. There are also several links on their website to similar collations and statewide groups working on immigration issues. This also helps readers to understand the role that employers can have in undocumented immigration. If employers restricted workers and only allowed documented workers much of the negative thoughts around undocumented workers might be alleviated. If undocumented workers are unable to find work they are less likely to move to the United States which would most likely change people mind about immigration. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

Feet in 2 Worlds - (Citizen and Journalistic) – This blog has articles written by reporters with immigrant roots. The reporters are from all over the United States, the Internet, and the radio. The institute is based at the Center for New York City Affairs at The New School. This institution is nonpartisan and work on public policy issues. The institute has many partners including New America Media, the New York Community Media Alliance and ImpreMedia. One of their goals is telling the stories of immigrants and they do this on the Internet and radio and through videos. They are focused on all immigrant communities and not specifically on one group. They are funded in part by donations that are tax-deductible and it helps keep journalists across the United States covering these issues. This blog helps bring together people in different areas and allow for journalist invested in immigration to publicize issues in a very easy to access place. With an issue such as immigration it is vital to an organizations cause that people who are passionate about the same topic are able to have a forum in which they can hold conversation and this site seems to bridge that gap. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

National Immigration Law Center – (Institutional) – “Our mission is to defend and advance the rights and opportunities of low-income immigrants and their family members.” They have a lot of information specifically on the DREAM Act as well as other issues facing immigrants in the United States. They were founded in 1979 and have been working to defend and promote immigrant rights. They work within the US law that exists and are experts on legal matters. Much of the work they do is for low-income legal immigrants but they do address undocumented people living in the US. They are a non-profit organization with a donation page on their site. The money that is donated helps local and state immigrant rights groups get their opinions out and analyze policy. They also produce publications that include information on eligibility for specific programs that are available for immigrants.

On Monday Obama met to work specifically on the issue of immigration reform. Before being elected Obama promised to work heavily on immigration reform within the first year of being elected. He has yet to make any huge strides, with the passing of time and move to mid-term elections it is vital that Obama address immigration now and not wait. Specific measures, including the DREAM Act, have had support from both parties and yet this act which would affect an estimated 65,000 students a year has not been passed.

In the past week over 250 undocumented immigrants, with criminal records, were arrested in Texas. One issue is that many of these immigrants had already previously served time in jail and had yet to be deported. Comprehensive immigration reform is important because it would help give law abiding undocumented immigrant reason to stay out of trouble and allow them a pathway to citizenship. Personally, the biggest issue is that undocumented immigrants with criminal records are being allowed into jails but otherwise law abiding immigrants who are undocumented aren’t given opportunities like education. Shouldn’t the investment in education be more important than the investment in jails?

Should comprehensive immigration reform become a priority for the United States government? Specifically is immigration reform legislation something that President Obama should push through considering his promises to the immigrant community of the United States? President Obama just over one year ago was promising the immigrant community that he would work on comprehensive immigration reform and that changes would be made within the first year of his presidency. Obama has not followed through on this promise and there are many organizations, agencies, journalists, and citizens working to push the United States government to look at comprehensive immigration reform.

Immigration reform is one of the most important issues facing the United States future. It affects the politics, economics, and educational sides of our country as well as being a major social issue that needs to be addressed. In order to understand immigration one must look at this issue on a national, statewide, citywide, and community wide issue. The majority of links are for institutional sources because organizations that bring together citizens, communities, and states in an organized way are able to bring people working for one cause together.

Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) - (Institutional) . The Federation for American Immigration Reform is a non-profit, non-partisan group that believes that immigration policies must be reformed. This non-profit organization has about 250,000 members and is supported by personal contributions and foundations. The organization encourages civilians to lobby their representatives and work for immigration reform. This is a very proactive way of looking at immigration and clearly tells citizens how they can help establish change. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

Another resource that they have is a list of fact sheets and studies to help educate immigrants.Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

Reform Immigration For America - (Institutional) – This campaign works to bring together organizations and individuals in the pursuit of immigration reform. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

This organization helps bring immigrants together and offers them resources to make their transition to their new life easier. It serves as a great center for immigrants. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

DREAM Act- (Citizen) – This myspace page looks like it is run by a 20 year old who supports the DREAM Act. There is information on what the act is as well as videos and images in support of the act. The DREAM Act is an act to help support undocumented immigrants who have been in the United States for at least five years and have grown up as otherwise law abiding members of the United States. The act would help grant them rights in regards to attending school and helping them become citizens. The myspace page has videos of Obama speaking about the act as well as photographs of immigration rallies. The page has over 2,200 friends and lists the things that people can do to push this piece of legislation. This act is one of the most realistic and relevant changes that is going to happen if comprehensive immigration reform becomes a priority.

We are a component of the Department of Homeland Security. They deal with citizenship issues including individuals, family members, and adoptions. This is a government organization so I was able to find little on funding but an interesting aspect is a form, which gives information about misconduct by staff, which was different than any other source I found. Because this is so much about laws and regulations it is a great way to understand how hard legal immigration can really be. Date accessed: 02/22/2010.

Huerto De La Familia – (Organizational) – The organization, which is located in Eugene, Oregon, was established in 1999 and gained its non-profit status in 2004. The organizations main focus is to help low income Latino immigrants who are suffering with hunger and poverty issues. They work with other organizations and run a children’s program. One benefit of this organization is that they create a community for these families who are suffering from similar issues. They offer services to families who receive Food Stamps. A huge form of support for this organization is the volunteer work that others do. They are supported by donations including monetary ones as well as supplies. They are supported by other organizations doing similar work including Heifer International and the National Immigrant Farming Initiative.

Comprehensive immigration reform has to include employers cracking down on the employment of undocumented workers. In Houston, Texas undocumented workers were being transported into the United States by the “Super Express Van Tours.” Authorities in the last month have shut down at least 14 transportation companies that smuggle illegal immigrants into the United States. Most people in favor of immigration reform agree that employers must work to enforce immigration laws but the owner of this specific company was arrested which may set precedent for the future.

The senators suggested that having more stringent policies and procedures if employers learn their employees are undocumented immigrants could allow for more jobs to become available to some of the nearly 15.3 million unemployed Americans. These changes could help give more Americans jobs but would also greatly affect immigrant populations.

This video was taken during a protest in Washington, DC on Tuesday January 26th 2010. This protest consisted of pro-immigration activists wishing for the suspension of deportations of immigrants to the United States who have family members who are citizens of the United States. This protest took place outside of the Department of Homeland Security and was meant to draw attention to the lack of immigration reform currently taking place. The protesters were aiming to call President Obama’s attention to the lack of reform taking place. The video shows clips of the protest including speeches and documentation of the protest. The video appears on a blog about current immigrant experiences and serves as an informative video for citizens but it is a journalistic source that was posted on http://news.feetintwoworlds.org/. This blog contains journalistic work done by reporters with immigrant backgrounds and is appealing to general citizens.

This photograph was taken in April at a meeting to discuss the amount of tuition money that undocumented students in Oregon should be paying to attend public universities here. The article appears on oregonlive.com and was written by a reporter from Portland, Oregon. The photographer, Randy L. Rasmussen, works for the Oregonian. He captured the faces of young adults listening intently on what was being said about the potential for undocumented students to receive a break and only be required to pay the in-state tuition costs at public universities. The students that he captures evoke a tired feeling in the frame but what brings out their faces are the faces of those in the background. The background shows a wide variety in the age and race of the rest of the audience and announces the wide group of people that this bill would influence.

Overview:

The timeline that I provided creates a clear overview of the history of immigration to the United States. Because the United States is a country of immigrants it is vital to look at how our government has shaped the country through policy surrounding immigration. It is important to look at past laws that have shaped immigration in order to determine what should be done in the future. The biggest change over the next years will be determining what should be done about undocumented residents residing in the United States.

I am looking at the issue of immigration in the United States. More specifically, I will look into the role that illegal immigrants plays in the United States workforce. I will closely examine the hiring practices of illegal immigrants and explore what solutions should exist for illegal immigrants who are otherwise law abiding members of society. Both the Democrats and Republicans take clear stances on immigration laws and reform. Immigration laws affect workplace ethics and the American economy. The laws and solutions that are put into place today will greatly affect the future of the United States economy as well as social policy.
